{"id":5178,"date":"2017-02-09T12:15:59","date_gmt":"2017-02-09T18:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cremacr.org\/?p=5178"},"modified":"2017-02-13T23:10:44","modified_gmt":"2017-02-14T05:10:44","slug":"sharks-create-controversy-within-the-costa-rican-biologists-association","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cremacr.org\/en\/sharks-create-controversy-within-the-costa-rican-biologists-association\/","title":{"rendered":"Sharks create controversy within the Costa Rican Biologists Association"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>44 members question board of managers procedures<\/p>\n<p>San Jos\u00e9, Costa Rica \u2013 February 9, 2017<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, 44 members from the Costa Rican Biologists Association sent <a href=\"http:\/\/cremacr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Bi\u00f3logos-Colegiados-a-JD-Cole-Biologos.pdf\">a letter<\/a> to the Association\u2019s President asking for information regarding the procedures and criteria used to assign the Association\u2019s representative to the CITES Board of Scientific Authority Representatives (CRACCITES) and its Non-permanent Hammerhead Shark Committee, in addition to the mechanisms in place that guarantee the Association\u2019s position reflects its members\u2019 collected interests. The Association\u2019s board of managers named the biologist \u00c1lvaro Segura Hern\u00e1ndez as its CRACCITES and shark committee representative without consulting its own members.<\/p>\n<p>The Non-permanent Hammerhead Shark Committee will issue a recommendation to CRACCITES on whether or not it should authorize a shipment of 690 kg of hammerhead shark fins solicited by the Puntarenas, Costa Rica fin exporter Smalley Development. On February 22 CRACCITES will officially decide the fate of this shipment and an additional 8 tons of hammerhead fins that have been stockpiled in Puntarenas since March 1, 2015 when the export prohibition went into effect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is already an August 2015 study from CRACCITES, with input from the Biologists Association, that recommends the stoppage of all hammerhead shark exports,\u201d said Randall Arauz, member #867. \u201cThe Biologists Association has to respect this position or adopt another one based on new scientific information and in agreement with its other members,\u201d continued Arauz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Biologists Association must not take the country\u2019s CITES commitments lightly,\u201d said Mahmood Sasa, member #847. \u201cOur Association has to be transparent when it comes to these kinds of issues, including the export of shark fins from species in the convention\u2019s appendices; and our representative in this and any other committee needs to express the position of the majority of our members,\u201d concluded Sasa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m calling on the Biologists Association\u2019s sergeant-at-arms to take immediate action on this matter in order to guarantee its members that a democratic and transparent, participative process is being respected,\u201d said Geiner Golf\u00edn, member #1608. \u201cRight now we don\u2019t know the Association\u2019s position regarding this delicate issue.
